Simultaneous interpreters and boothinterpreters
The most common form of simultaneous interpreting is working in a booth (cabin interpreting). In most cases, one or more soundproof booths are installed at the back of an event room and usually staffed by two or three interpreters. Simultaneous interpreters always work as a team due to the high mental and physical effort involved, regularly taking turns and supporting each other in case of difficulties. For example, the interpreter who is not translating can draw the technician's attention to a change in sound quality or whisper in vocabulary. The interpreters listen to the speaker via headphones and speak themselves via a microphone whose signal is transmitted to the listeners' headphones.
Sign language interpreter
Sign language interpreting involves interpreting between spoken language and sign language or between different sign languages internationally. Since the target and source language of interpreting between spoken and sign language is transmitted both acoustically and visually via different channels, the interpreter can work at any time and in any place without the need for technical equipment or interpreting booths. The speaker of the spoken language is not drowned out by the simultaneous interpreter.
Off-the-cuff interpreting
Extemporaneous interpreting - or sight-reading - is also considered to be a form of simultaneous interpreting, since here too the rendering in the target language takes place almost simultaneously with the recording of the source text. A written text is reproduced orally in another language as quickly and fluently as possible. Strictly speaking, from-sheet translation is, as the name suggests, a form of translation because the source text is fixed and could theoretically be repeated several times. In practice, however, it is classified as a hybrid form.
